News for our membership

January 27th, 2009

Erin Hart, Chair, MWA/Helen McCloy Scholarship Committee: The MWA/McCloy Scholarship deadline is approaching at the end of February. Writers can use the scholarship funds for shorter-term writing workshops, conferences, and seminars, not just university/college-level classes.

Margery Flax: Barry Zeman, Chair of the MWA Publication Committee, just received word that MWA has reached a tentative agreement with a leading publisher for the 2010 MWA Anthology, to be edited by the fabulous Charlaine Harris. Final information will be forthcoming after the contract has been signed.
As has been our custom, 10 of the 20 stories in the anthology will be selected through an open submission process. A top notch experienced judging panel will be set up to select the stories. The deadline will be the Ides of March! Contact the main office for more information.

Note: These are open to MWA members only. Another great reason to join!

Live blogging Love is Murder

January 26th, 2009

Tim Broderick: Less than two weeks away, Love is Murder is a mystery/genre fiction convention in the midwest, and the midwest chapter is one of the primary partners. I’ll be attending and live blogging the convention right here.
But that’s nothing compared to attending. If you’ve never gone to a mystery convention, this is a good one to start with.

Training in New York

January 23rd, 2009

Julie Hyzy reports: I recently returned from MWA Board orientation in New York City. In addition to meeting new national board members and saying farewell to departing ones, I came back bursting with ideas for how to make the Midwest Chapter even better than it is today.
I was thrilled to be able to connect with other chapter presidents. Everyone was open and helpful, discussing what works and what doesn’t in their individual regions and the discourse was invaluable.
Jess Lourey was also there. Jess, formerly a board member of MWMWA is now a National Director-at-Large. I’m looking forward to working with Jess in her new capacity and also looking forward to working with the rest of the 2009 board.

Mini meeting report

January 21st, 2009

From Michael Allen Dymmoch: Freelance journalist Daniel Smith kept MWA members captivated for an hour after the meeting ended. Topics ranged from his police family history to the philosophic differences between fiction and non-fiction.
Several attendees remarked that Smith’s book, On the Job, gave them a decidedly empathetic view of police officers and their work.
