Making QR codes
When scanned by smart phones or tablets equipped with cameras and the proper app, these handy little images can connect people immediately with any webpage.
You can have one for your website. If you have a free story to give away, you can send people right to the page that they can download it from. If you have ebooks, send them to the page they can purchase it.
Let’s say we want to make a QR code for the MWAmidwest.com website.
Open a new browser window or tab, and go to the webpage you want to make a QR code for, in this case it’s http://mwamidwest.com
Select that URL from the browser window and copy it. This will make sure you don’t make a mistake typing the URL.
Go to https://bitly.com/
Where it says “Paste a link to shorten it,” paste the link.
It will return a link, something like this: http://bit.ly/fL7z7A
Now here’s the tricky part. Copy that link – all of it – and paste it into the location bar (this is the place where you see URLs displayed, like “https://bitly.com/shorten/” which is what your browser should be showing you now)
Don’t hit return or enter just yet. You need to edit the URL to ad “.qr” to the end.
So it reads http://bit.ly/fL7z7A.qr
That should load in a page that displays the QR code associated with the bitly url for your webpage. Go ahead and click that link and you’ll see the QR code for MWAmidwest.com
And that’s it. Right click on the image or click-and-drag it to your desktop and you have an image that’s ready to go on business cards, postcards or even book covers.

May 30th, 2011
When: 4 pm to about 6 pm, Saturday June 4
Where: The Midwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America tent at the Printers Row Lit Fest. We’re in tent V, near the intersection of Dearborn and Polk.
Who can participate? Anyone – you don’t have to be an MWA member.
How does it work?
Take one of five opening sentences and come up with a short story – so short that you can read it in five minutes or less. We’ll be timing you, but if the story is good enough we just forget to look at the clock.
Here’s the opening sentences, you can make them any gender you want:
1) He wasn’t going to make it.
2) It was the smell that got to her.
3) Digging a hole six-feet deep was harder than he thought.
4) He’d have done it different if he’d known how much weight she’d gained.
5) They say a goldfish will eat anything.
Judging will be completely arbitrary and potentially quite unfair. But regardless it’ll be awesome because we have two of the most distinguished authors in Chicago history, Barbara D’Amato and Sara Paretsky, judging. So no, no pressure here. Nope, none at all.
What can you win? All participants will likely win prizes and there will be one grand prize awarded – a $25 Starbucks gift card.
Anything else? We’re limited to at most 12 participants due to time. There will be a sign-up sheet at the tent, but first come, first served.

For the second year, the Midwest Chapter had a presence at Chicago’s Printers Row Lit Festival. This time, we were joined by MWA’s Margery Flax who “enjoyed” the French folk music from a nearby stage. For two days. MWMWA president Julie Hyzy has a report with photos up at her blog.
